TASK 4
ESSAY ADVICE
Imagine you are going to write an essay about your ideas.
Read the following statements on writing an essay. Discuss with your partner and
decide if these are true or false.
1) You should get straight to the point in an essay. People should know immediately what
you think about the topic. There is no need to write an introduction to the subject.
2) At the start of an essay you need to create a ‘Thesis statement’. This is the fact or idea
you want to explain or prove in the rest of your essay. It is the main focus of the essay.
3) The middle part of your essay is called the body. This must be at least 2 contrasting
paragraphs.
4) Each paragraph should have a topic sentence. This shows the main idea of the paragraph
and tells the reader what to expect in each paragraph.
5) The end of your essay should bring your ideas together in a ‘conclusion’. You should not
start to discuss new information in the conclusion but you could maybe leave the reader
with a rhetorical question.
