IMPERIAL ENGLISH UK SYLLABUS (LEVEL 1, 2 & 3)
FOREWORD
The Imperial English UK syllabus is presented over the three-level course. The topics and grammar
items will be familiar to the majority of teachers. But the soft skills and learner training elements are
the features that bring the programme to life, combined with the teacher’s confidence in using English
and their interest in what the students want to say.
Embedded into the course is the need to use the language in a meaningful and appropriate way. This
is achieved by the teacher highlighting functional language as much as grammatical accuracy simply
by ‘teaching English through English’, which means using the target language as much as possible in
the classroom even when giving instructions and in informal conversation. To help with this a
Functional English Guide is provided in the course Vocabulary Bank materials.
To enable your students to become independent learners the course also includes features such as
analysing texts to identify and name grammar items and discourse features and awareness of
register. Personal development is achieved by awareness of individual learning styles, encouraging
self-reflection and critical thinking. These elements appear throughout the course but are noted in the
mapping documents as a reminder to the teacher.
With the emphasis on ‘doing’ in every module, students are further required to be analytical as well as
building confidence in oral presentation skills, giving practice in research skills, developing team work
skills and learning the importance of time management.
These soft skills are provided in the syllabus items and their importance cannot be underestimated. If
an individual cannot perform tasks independently or continue to study and develop outside class, we
have failed as teachers. The Imperial English UK programme has taken all these aspects of learning
into account to produce a valuable, meaningful and motivating course.
