               General English

                 Linguistic Aims:
                 Distinguishing uses of the Past Simple and Past Continuous and using the Past Continuous to add
                 interest to anecdotes and stories.
                 Talking about past habits.
                 Increasing the scope of the narrative by mastering the use of the Past Simple used together with
                 the Past Perfect.
                 Talking about obligation and permission using ‘have to’, ‘can’, ‘be allowed to’, ‘should’ and ‘must’.
                 Using passive structures in the present and the past in relation to newspaper articles.
                 Using a range of future forms to talk about spontaneous decisions, planned events and
                 arrangements.
                 Distinguishing between the Present Perfect and Continuous when used to refer to experience.
                 Expressing probable and improbable conditions and time clauses.
                 Making comparisons.
                 Using articles and quantifiers.
                 Reporting statements, questions, requests and commands.
                 Recognising and using relative clauses.
                 Understanding and using a range of phrasal verbs and some idioms.
                 Using adjectives and adverbs in descriptive writing.
                 Focusing on collocation and dependent prepositions.
                 Using tag questions.
                 Using sentence structures for describing, explaining and justifying.
                 Using the structure as…as to compare.
                 Using modals for ability, probability, obligation, prohibition and permission.
                 Revising common verb patterns and using more complex verb patterns. Recognising differences in
                 meaning between gerund & infinitive patterns.
                 Using modals to express deductions made in the present and past.

                 Reading/listening to extract specific information.
                 Reading/listening to extract general gist.

                 Reconstructing narratives.
                 Giving descriptions and using appropriate adjectives and adverbs.
                 Writing letters and emails – formal and informal.
                 Awareness and use of linking words.
                 Discussing and expressing opinions.
                 Constructing a variety of dialogues (e.g. arranging a meeting, recounting an event, discussing likes
                 and dislikes, expressing attitudes and trends, discussing customs).
                 Using functional language to make suggestions, agree and disagree, apologise, offer and request
                 assistance in a range of registers.
                 Using social and informal expressions.
                 Writing articles and using journalistic style.
