ASSESSMENT
6.1 Assessment Strategies
Students will be exposed to the full range of assessment methods used in UK English language
provision. These strategies allow the demonstration of student progress within the areas identified
above, and more importantly, at the level of study they are engaged with. Thus, both the learning
outcomes for and the overarching aims of the English Course can be assessed and verified.
6.2 Forms of Assessment
Student summative assessment within the English Course has been carefully designed to ensure that
students have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning and meet the stated outcomes. In
practice, the assessment methods employed cover essay writing, formal examinations, report
writing, group work, debating and formal presentations, together with the compilation of a portfolio
of tasks and activities undertaken, which can be reviewed and assessed through the use of the app.
Formative assessment activity will form an important part of assessing student’s progress towards
meeting the learning outcomes and the overarching English course aims. In-class activities including;
group working and discussion, debates, writing activities (including draft submission support), review
tasks and tutor feedback given to students regarding their individual performance, will be used. These
activities will ensure that students are fully prepared for the summative assessment tasks.
6.3 Regular Progression Checks
There are regular progress checks through homework and review tasks as well as the formative and
summative assessment procedures that are followed in the English Course. This includes a half-way
review and end of course review and exam, plus regular individual and group presentations,
discussion activities, project work and homework. The use of ‘Can Do statements’ are recommended
as an ongoing method of review and should be used to encourage students in self-assessment and
target setting increasing learner independence. Also, they can be used as a means for teachers to track
individual and class progression and as an assessment tool to review various aspects of the course.
All these measure learner progress and identify any difficulties that they may be having. The
students are also encouraged to say how they feel about their progress when / if they have a
tutorial.
The progress tests are not only used to measure the students’ learning but, more importantly, you use
this as a mechanism to provide support to your students. It allows tutors to identify students that may
be academically struggling and who require additional support.
