TASK 3
READING
You are going to read about the other four types of learning styles that
Dr. Silbersky mentioned during Task 2.
a) Before you read, talk to your partner and try to guess what the other four
styles might be.
Quickly read (skim) the text to find out if you were correct.
_________________________________________ LEARNING TO LEARN
Verbal learners prefer to use words, both in speaking and writing, to aid
them in their learning. People with this style find it easier to say what they
are thinking or what they mean through using words. They love reading and
writing and enjoy playing with the sounds of different words, for example in
rhymes. Techniques like scripting a piece of listening, or writing lists are often
useful for verbal learners.
_________________________________________
Logical learners have a high ability to solve problems and use logic and reasoning
to find answers. They learn well using numbers and are good at solving maths
problems in their head. This type of learner usually works well by using a linear
system for ordering tasks and also work well with computers and statistics. It
could help this style of learner to make logical associations with information
which seems illogical, and to put information into a structured sequence.
_________________________________________
Social type learners work well in groups or with other people. They enjoy
speaking activities, drama and debates. This type of learner is often good at
communicating and has a good understanding of people’s feelings and mood.
Some obvious strategies to aid social learners are to work in groups as much as
possible and share your ideas with others. Role-plays have often been found to
work well for this type of learner, as have group debates.
_________________________________________
This style could be seen as the opposite to the social learning style, as they
are more private and independent. They often concentrate well and have no
problems focusing their thoughts and feelings onto the current topic or problem
they are working on. They have a high understanding of their own beliefs and
preferences and prefer to use self-study. It helps solitary learners to create a
personal interest in the work being done to give them motivation and to set
goals and aims effectively.
b) Write the correct heading at the top of each paragraph.
a Logical (mathematical)
b Solitary (intrapersonal)
c Verbal (linguistic)
d Social (interpersonal)
