APPROACH
2.1 Learning Approach
For effective delivery of the English Course taking a holistic approach is paramount: understanding
that students cannot learn or progress unless they are motivated, are comfortable in their
surroundings and feel they can trust their teachers. To promote this, all aspects of the “The English
Course” feature student training elements to develop:
Student Autonomy so students can self-evaluate and study effectively and independently
Study Skills to prepare students for the challenges they will face in the real world and higher
education
Critical Thinking Skills so students can explain and develop ideas and concepts
Communication Skills to enable students to present and articulate effective conversations in
various environments.
The above elements are introduced to students from the outset of their studies and the approach
taken by the Imperial English UK ELT team has resulted in good results, with most students being able
to achieve, or exceed, their English language target grades at a relatively quick rate.
2.2 Teaching Approach
Delivery of the English Course involves a wide range of teaching and learning strategies.
Knowledge and understanding will be delivered by actively engaging the participating students in
the learning and teaching process through practically based in-class activities which will also be
supported by encouraging students to engage in independent and autonomous study. The use of the
English Course digital materials and app-based learning enable students to undertake practical
activities both facilitated by the teacher and during their independent study periods. These are
pivotal to the success of this independent aspiration.
The delivery of topic specific skills will be developed through the range of topics covered in each
unit. The course has been designed to give a generic introduction to a range of subjects (both
general and academic) that will engage individual students regardless of subject discipline or
chosen field of study. This provides a strong basis for students to then continue and further develop
their subject specific language skills in their future studies.
The delivery of intellectual skills will again primarily be developed through in-class practical
activities and interactional tasks such as group-based discussion sessions, reflective writing and
critical thinking tasks. This will support the development of students from dependent to
