Topic 17 - Bad Experience
- Develop and use should have and shouldn’t have and
the third conditional to talk and write about regrets and
bad experiences.
- Read a travel diary to identify synonyms and

- Discuss problem and solutions about bad travel
experiences.
- Develop critical thinking and learner independence to
edit your own and others writing.
Each student is given a piece of paper and they must imagine
what their worst holiday would look like. They have 3 minutes
to draw this. Then with a partner they must ask yes/no
Optional Warmer questions about the picture to find out what went wrong (e.g.
Did it rain? / Were the staff unfriendly? / Did you go to the
police?). For weaker students you may want to model this first
on the board and encourage students to question your
holiday.
Task 1
Skill Speaking
Time 15 mins
Introduce the task by asking the class if they have had any
problems on holiday before. Then ask for a solution. Give
Teaching Tips students time in pairs or groups to brainstorm a list of
problems and possible solutions.
Assessment Write the ideas up on the board during feedback.
Task 2
Skill Listening
Time 15 mins
Introduce the context of the recording (two friends discussing
a holiday abroad) and allow students time to complete the
Teaching Tips task. If necessary, play the recording again. For stronger
students the second time they listen they could write down
any other key words that they have heard.
Assessment Feedback as a class.
Problems:
Trouble getting to the airport on time.
Getting sunburnt.
Getting charged for overweight baggage.
