Topic 17 - Famous Stories

Countdown: Split the class into small teams. Prepare a
number of cards with letters of the alphabet on them and
place them into piles of vowels and consonants. Teams take
it in turns to choose either a vowel or a consonant to make
up a 9 letter word. When this string of letters has been put
Optional Warmer onto the board, teams have 1 minute to make the longest
word they can from those letters. Each letter can only be
used once. The team with the longest correct word gets 1
point. The letters are then placed back into the piles and
shuffled, before the next team are asked to choose the
vowels and consonants to create the next 9 letter game.

You could put the image on the board and do the task as a whole
group activity, discussing what they think the book might be
about.

Give students enough time to discuss questions in small groups.
If the class is speaking a lot then let the activity run slightly
longer.

As pairs speak, monitor for good phrases used to predict content.
