Topic 1 - Class Expectations
- Review and practice the use of modal verbs for
permission / ability / obligation.
Aims for today - Review and develop opinion/discussion language to
make group decisions.
- Write a set of rules for your teacher.
Ask students to think of as many situations where there are
rules (e.g. a type of sport, games, law etc.) and get them to
list as many of the rules as they can think of. Students share
Optional Warmer with each other before feeding back to the class. Aim is to
elicit modal verbs as you go.

Skill Speaking
Time 10 mins
Teaching Tips
Give students time to discuss in pairs and monitor the use of
Assessment modals as you listen. Nominate students to share opinions
with the class.
Suggested answers: ‘must’ could be replaced with ‘should’ or
Answers ‘have to’.

Time 5 mins
Give students some time to look through the Grammar Key in
Teaching Tips
their Course Books.
Elicit examples of modal verbs from the warmer and the
Assessment given examples. Highlight the different modal verbs and their
uses.
