P. 1
Topic 16 – The World’s Greatest
By the end of the lesson you will be able to…
- Use superlative adjectives in speaking and writing
Aims for today - Identify key information from a listening about world
records
- Discuss and design a quiz to provide practice for other
students.
Comparison Game: Write a number of categories on the board
and ask students as a class to compare themselves to each
other and put themselves in an order. To make this more fun
Optional Warmer set a time limit. Categories that work well are ages, height,
distance travelled to school, longest time studying English, etc.
This could be used to introduce the idea of superlatives (E.g.
So X is the oldest student in the class.)
Task 1
Skill Speaking
Time 5 mins
Write World Record on the board and draw students’ attention
to its meaning in the Course Book.
This could be extended in to a game to add further ideas in
which students guess various world records. E.g. “What’s the
world record for the number of hotdogs eaten in a minute?”
etc.
Teaching Tips
Suggested answers: world’s fastest plane / longest flight, most
expensive cake / largest wedding cake, biggest burger, most
expensive dress.
World Record (noun) - The best performance or most
amazing achievement of its kind.
Clarify understanding and drill pronunciation. Emphasise the
stress on the first syllable in record when it is used as a noun
(as opposed to its verb form which stresses the second
syllable).
Assessment
Monitor pairs speaking and highlight useful language on the
board during feedback.
Give students a chance to tell the class their ideas and try to
extend speaking where possible.
Task 2
