Topic 2 - Learning to learn
By the end of the lesson you will be able to…
- Identify and categorise different parts of speech in English
and use this to develop dealing with unknown vocabulary
Aims for today - Read about different ways of learning and how people
differ
- Discover what type of learner you are by completing a
questionnaire
- Discuss ways of improving learning to meet our objectives
Letter String Dictation: Begin by dictating a string of letters to the
class. The class write each letter down in order and then work in
pairs to form the questions from the string of letters. (For
example: whatdidyoudoattheweekend? whatisyourname?
Optional Warmer wheredoyoulive?). The class then work in pairs to ask and
answer the questions with each other. Any combination of
questions or statements can be used depending on the group’s
ability level to make the task harder or easier.

Make sure the class understand ‘part of speech’ (E.g. how we
Teaching Tips categorise words by their function e.g. nouns, verbs, adjectives
etc.)
Put the table on the board to aid feedback.
A.
Monitor pairs speaking and ask for their ideas as a whole
class during feedback. Ensure students understand the
vocabulary before moving to the next task.

Assessment Nominate individual students the give feedback and ask for
example words.
C.
Monitor as students answer the questions and help where
necessary. Have students feedback by putting their answers into
full sentences.
